This family of frogs are the ‘true frogs’ or typical frogs. These frogs are characterized by a moderate build, well developed limbs that are webbed in some species and highly variable habits. Some are completely aquatic, while others are terrestrial as well as fossorial. The following genera occur in south India. An * indicates endemic species.

These frogs are now being revised upon, taxonomically and have been assigned separate genus.
The following are the species formerly been placed in the genus Rana (LINNAEUS, 1758), till recently.
The genus Sylvirana (DUBOIS, 1992) is endemic to Ceylonese Malabar sub-region.
