HYDROPHIIDAE - South Indian Herpetofauna HYDROPHIIDAE - South Indian Herpetofauna

This family of snakes is commonly called ‘sea snakes’. As their name suggests, these snakes live their entire life in sea. They are thoroughly aquatic and have a paddle-like tail to help them swim better. They are highly unique among all snakes for these traits. This family is distributed in the coastal waters throughout the world, the highest diversity being found in tropical Asutralian coasts. All sea snakes are ovoviviparous / live bearing, as there can be no chances of incubation of eggs under the sea. They have very poorly developed ventral scales and so cannot move on land. The exception is a separate group called sea-kraits (Laticaudids), which come on to land and move freely. Not less than 30 different species occur in south Indian coasts. The following genera occur;

Kerilia GRAY, 1849
Praescutata WALL, 1921
Hydrophis LATREILLE, 1802
Enhydrina GRAY, 1849
Laticauda LAURENTI, 1768
Arstortia FISCHER, 1846
Lapemis GRAY, 1835
Microcephalophis LESSON, 1834
Pelamis DAUDIN, 1803
