BOIDAE - South Indian Herpetofauna

The family Boidae consists of constrictors like boas and pythons. Some authors place the pythons under a separate family Pythonidae. More or less, the bioas and pythons share the same characteristics like heavily built body, musculature and constricting behaviour. The python, in addition has spur, rudimentary limbs and heat sensitive pits in lip region. Both boas and pythons are predominantly nocturnal. The major difference is that boas are ovoviviparous and pythons are oviparous. Four representatives are recorded from southern India. An * indicates endemism.

Python molurus (LINNAEUS, 1758)
Gonglyophis conicus (SCHNEIDER, 1801)
Eryx johnii (RUSSELL, 1801)
Eryx whitakeri * (DAS, 1991)
